The Barranco del Alamo hike is a beautiful nature trail with lush greenery and a real insider tip for your Gran Canaria trip. The hiking route is also known as the stairway because two steep wooden steps help hikers to overcome the few meters of altitude in the gorge. The circular route is only about five kilometers long, but offers many beautiful photo opportunities. At the end of the hike, a leisurely break in the beautiful village of Teror beckons.
Barranco del Alamo
The wild gorge in the north of Gran Canaria surprises the lonely hiker with an impressive composition of constantly changing shades of green, steep rock faces and rustic footpaths. Bamboo, ferns, cacti, meter-high poplars and laurel trees alternate. Canarian palm trees can also be found here and there. The Barranco del Alamo boasts biodiversity and enchants with its wild beauty.

The hiking trail through the Alamo Gorge can be combined with different routes. Depending on where you turn, the circular trail can be easy to moderately difficult, just as you like. We present two possible routes here: the classic Barranco del Alamo hike (easy) and the Barranco del Alamo hike with a high-altitude trail as an addition (moderately difficult). The mountain village of Teror is the starting point and destination of the circular trail in both cases.
This hike in Gran Canaria is easy and is described as a standard route on several hiking portals. The starting point of the classic Barranco del Alamo hike is in the center of Teror, which means that a walk through the streets of the mountain village is included in the hiking route.
From the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino in the center of Teror, the streets Los Viñátigos and Ignacio Quintana Marrero lead you to the El Alamo district. There, a large wooden sign points the way down to the El Munigal bridge and the Barranco del Alamo. As soon as you enter the small path that leads you under the bridge and into the ravine, it turns green.
You reach the first wooden staircase of the hike after about 1,5 kilometers. The second wooden staircase is much smaller and is waiting for you about 500 meters further on. The wooden stairs are steep, but easy to walk. Their characteristic appearance has earned the hike the nickname "stairway path". After a total of just under 3 kilometers, the path leaves the gorge again and the route takes you back to the center of Teror.

No. 2: Barranco del Alamo hike with additional high-altitude trail
This hike is of moderate difficulty and our Gran Canaria insider tip for you. You can either start in the center of Teror or simply enter Barranco del Alamo on Google Maps and park on the side of the road in the Alamo district. Wooden signs point the way down to the Alamo Gorge. There you follow the beautiful nature trail in the shady greenery and climb the two famous staircases along the way.
Shortly after the second flight of stairs, you leave the gorge and turn left at the fork onto the hiking trail towards Las Abejas. This takes you up a high path and rewards you with great views. Instead of tall poplar trees, cacti line the path here. Accordingly, there is little shade to be expected, so you should think about sun protection or take the path early in the morning. Once you're at the top, if you're interested, you can also climb a small climbing path with a cave at the side of the path before you continue.
At the next fork in the road, choose the only path that is not signposted. It leads you back down and quickly back to the beginning of the Barranco del Alamo. For us, the panoramic high-altitude path was the perfect complement to the overgrown Alamo Gorge. Combined as a circular route, you can expect an extremely varied hike - a must for all hiking enthusiasts on a trip to Gran Canaria.
This is what awaits you on this Gran Canaria hike:
moderately difficult tour
circular route approx. 5 kilometers
almost only dirt paths
two steep staircases
a long climb

Important: sturdy shoes, sun protection and water
