The urn tomb is one of the famous royal tombs of the rock city of Petra . It was built around 70 AD. It gets its name from the small urn-shaped ornament in the gable of the facade. The three window-like recesses in the upper section between the half-columns are burial niches. The window directly above the doorway was added later when the urn tomb was converted into a Byzantine church in 446 AD . A colonnaded courtyard was originally laid out in front of the sandstone facade. Five columns from this colonnaded courtyard have survived. Another distinctive feature of the tomb complex is the two-tiered vaulted chamber beneath the tomb facade.
