Torellneset headland

Island Nordauslandet

Arctic (Svalbard Archipelago)

Torellneset is located in the south-west of the island Nordauslandet, the second largest island of Svalbard. The flat long beach is known for frequent sightings of Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) and is located in the Northeast Svalbard Nature Reserve on the Hinlopen Strait. The headland is named after the Swedish geologist Otto Martin Torell.

Tourists on cruises can disembark at Torellneset and carefully approach the world's second largest seal species on foot. In addition, you can walk onto the Mariebreen glacier very close to Torellneset.

On a cruise on the Sea Spirit in Svalbard, we observed a walrus colony of around thirty walruses on Torellneset Island. Most of the animals were warming themselves in the sun, protected by the group. A few walruses were also seen along the shore and in the water, and a large bull spontaneously paid us a visit. Depending on whether the walruses have calves with them and how relaxed the animals are, a distance of 50 to 150 meters should be maintained.

The AGE™ experience report “Svalbard cruise: walruses, bird cliffs and polar bears – what more could you want?” takes you on our exciting journey with many animal sightings in Svalbard.

Our Svalbard travel guide will take you on a tour of the various attractions, sights and wildlife viewing.

Torellneset: Information about the namesake Otto Torell

Otto Torell (1828 – 1900) was a Swedish glaciologist and Arctic researcher and is considered the father of modern polar research.

In 1858 and 1859, Otto Torell led two expeditions to Svalbard and Greenland to prepare for a major scientific research trip, which took place in 1861 and provided a huge amount of data in several scientific fields.

It's worth emphasizing that his expedition was purely scientific. Most other expeditions of his time, in contrast, had primarily commercial motives or served primarily to collect geographical data. There were a total of nine scientists on board Torell's expedition ship. Together, they laid important foundations for polar research.

In recognition of his scientific contribution, the Torellneset peninsula was named after him.
