[su_heading size="12" margin="10"]DR Congo: In the Democratic Republic of Congo, we visited Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Gorilla trekking is an extraordinary and unique experience. Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a 6.000 square kilometer national park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is home to one of the last remaining populations of Eastern Lowland Gorillas. The park was established in 1970 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. It is also known for its lush rainforest and is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species. The park also contains two extinct volcanoes: Kahuzi and Biega, which explains its name. Eastern Lowland Gorillas are the largest subspecies of gorilla and are critically endangered. Seeing these animals in the wild is therefore all the more special. Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the few places where gorilla trekking is possible.
Aside from the national park, the Democratic Republic of Congo has many other attractions. Here are some of the most well-known: • Mount Nyiragongo: An active volcano in Virunga National Park, known for its lava lakes. • Lola ya Bonobo: A bonobo sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of this endangered ape species. • Virunga National Park: A national park in the east of the country, home to mountain gorillas and other rare animal species. • Zongo Falls: A spectacular waterfall in the northwest of the country. • Lake Kivu: A large lake on the border with Rwanda, known for its scenic beauty and fishing industry.
