We haven't had much snow this winter, so at the beginning of March we suddenly found ourselves longing for a winter vacation. But with the first days of spring already beckoning with crocuses and T-shirt weather, we still found it difficult to leave spring completely behind. After a little research, we found the solution: A short vacation on Lake Constance with a detour to Liechtenstein in March was the perfect combination of spring and winter for us.

Yesterday we let our gaze wander over the vast, shimmering plain of Lake Constance, spotted the first flowerbeds, threw off our jackets, and enjoyed the wonderful spring weather. A glorious day! But was that really yesterday? I adjust my daughter's snowsuit and absorb the view of the white-capped mountain peaks. Today we are at an altitude of 2,000 meters on the Sareiserjoch, surrounded by the Liechtenstein Alps, ski slopes, and the mountain hut atmosphere. What a contrast.

On the way home, we suddenly spotted several fires in the distance. In the valley, on the mountain, everywhere. Large fires. We were curious and followed our noses towards the firelight. The result was an unexpectedly beautiful ending with Fire tower and flying sparks under the starry sky, Brass music, Feuerwerk and delicious Apple fritters.

To be honest, we didn't experience the Funkenfest through perfect planning, but by chance at the end of our short vacation: We were simply in the right place at the right time. Later, we learned that always on the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday (and sometimes even the evening before, like in our case) the Funken (artfully stacked wooden towers) burn in the Vorarlberg region. This drives away the winter and brings good luck! The perfect end to our vacation for us.

We really enjoyed the change between the feeling of spring with a view of Lake Constance and the winter mood with a mountain panorama. If you're still spontaneously drawn to the snow in March and want to enjoy spring by the water at the same time, then a holiday in the four-country corner near Liechtenstein is just right for you. However, both Liechtenstein and Lake Constance are worth visiting separately and for a longer period of time. If you are traveling at the right time, the traditional Funkenfest in the Vorarlberg region is a very nice addition to your trip.

Note: Maldun is very family-friendly. There's a playground, a small ice skating rink for children, a toboggan run, practice slopes, and the Sareis cable car to the mountain hut with panoramic views. The mountain village offers guaranteed snow and is still low enough to make visiting with a baby easy.
