Silently: Canoeing through the rainforest of Ecuador!
A trip to the tropical rainforest is an adventure in itself - how about a canoe tour in the wilderness?
Since getting around in the jungle is naturally difficult, small waterways often offer welcome access and exciting animal viewing. Canoes in jungle areas are usually not maneuverable sports equipment, but rather simple wooden boats with hand-made paddles. It's not about logging kilometers, but about an authentic natural experience.
If canoeing in the rainforest is on your bucket list, you should find out about the right rainforest lodge before booking. Unfortunately, these days many of the lodges only offer tours in motor canoes. However, you can only enjoy the impressive sounds of the rainforest undisturbed in a paddle canoe. This is not only quieter and slower, but is also much better for observing wildlife.
In addition to the right provider or a corresponding rainforest lodge, the time of year is also crucial for your canoeing adventure: the water levels of the rivers and lagoons in the rainforest can vary greatly between the dry season and the rainy season.
Become part of the vibrant wilderness!

Personal experience canoeing in the rainforest
Today we were lucky in several ways: While we were canoeing on the large lagoon in the rainforest, enjoying the atmospheric lighting, we suddenly heard a quiet snort. Silence. Snort. Silence. A pink river dolphin was swimming next to us. We only caught a brief glimpse of its blow and a tiny bit of its head, but it was a unique feeling knowing it was there. A few bends further along in the river, we spotted an animal we'd been longing to see even more: a sloth hanging in the branches, and to our great delight, it wasn't even lazy. No, it was moving—and eating. Very slowly, of course.
We carefully guide our canoe beneath his tree and can't get enough of the view. Finally, we paddle a short distance into the flooded area of the rainforest. Sometimes we have to duck or maneuver between tree trunks. I feel enveloped and embraced, hearing only the gentle splash of the paddles and the sounds of the forest. When we finally return to the lagoon, it bids us farewell with the delicate red glow of the setting sun.

Canoe adventure in the rainforest of Ecuador
In Ecuador we went on canoe trips several times in the lowland rainforest of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. From the canoe we were able to see, for example, monkeys, the jungle bird hoatzin, macaws, caimans, snakes, frogs, a sloth and even river dolphins.
During our stay in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, we stayed in the Bamboo Eco Lodge in Ecuador spent the night. This rainforest lodge offers an active program of canoe tours and hikes and was one of the few lodges in the area to primarily use paddle canoes. You can choose to paddle your own canoe or sit back, relax and let the nature guide paddle.
We only took the long transport route on the day of arrival and departure, from Lago Agrio to the Bamboo Eco-Lodge in the jungle, in a motor canoe. (If you plan to visit the traditional Siona community, you will also be transported there by motor canoe.) All other tours were wonderfully silent. Night trips with the paddle canoe were also possible on request. In the light of the flashlight you can see the eyes of caimans glittering and enjoy the sounds of the night.
The photos in this article were taken during our trip through Ecuador in March. At that time, both the large lagoons of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and many small tributaries in the dense jungle were navigable.
